Bruce Springsteen – Working On A Dream

Working on a Dream is the 16th studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released on January 27, 2009. It has sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

The album was officially announced, along with a track listing, on November 17, 2008. The album first began selling in Germany and Ireland, on January 23.

The album came out of songwriting and recording that Springsteen continued with towards the close of his previous work, 2007′s Magic, as the band worked on a video for one of that album’s songs. “What Love Can Do” was written, in Springsteen’s words, as a “love in the time of Bush” meditation, but felt like the start of something new rather than a candidate for Magic. Encouraged by his 2000s producer Brendan O’Brien, Springsteen decided to start work on a new album and wrote “This Life”, “My Lucky Day”, “Life Itself”, “Good Eye”, and “Tomorrow Never Knows” over the next week. They were then recorded with the E Street Band during breaks on their 2007–2008 Magic Tour, with most being finished in just a few takes. This all reflected a faster pace of producing new music than Springsteen had been known for in the past; Springsteen said, “I hope Working on a Dream has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we’ve ever done.” As with Magic, most of the tracks were first recorded with a core rhythm section band comprising Springsteen, drummer Max Weinberg, bassist Garry Tallent, and pianist Roy Bittan; other members’ contributions were then added subsequently.

The album is the last to feature new work of founding E Street Band member Danny Federici, who died in April 2008. Federici’s son Jason also plays on the album.

Title number “Working on a Dream” was first performed during Springsteen’s November 2, 2008 appearance in Cleveland for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign (accompanied by Patti Scialfa), and then a chopped-up airing of the recorded version first appeared during the November 16 NBC Sunday Night Football broadcast at halftime. The intact “Working on a Dream” began airing on radio stations and their websites on November 21; it was made available for free download via iTunes and the Sony BMG website on November 24. The track entered the UK Singles Chart at position 195 the following week. A music video appeared on some foreign sites showing the recording of the song. “My Lucky Day” was made available in the U.S. on amazon.com on December 1, accompanied by a longer music video that showed Springsteen and the band arranging and recording the song. “Life Itself” was released as a free download from amazon.com on December 28, with a music video that featured studio footage interspersed with vague scene snippets that may illuminate the moody song.

On January 12, 2009, the album leaked onto the internet. On January 19, NPR.org scheduled a streaming of it free for a week, in advance of the actual release. Sony BMG’s Irish website also began streaming it. An extensive and carefully planned promotional push for Springsteen and the album was put together, incorporating his appearances at the Golden Globe Awards, the Barack Obama presidential inauguration, a new greatest hits album, the half-time show of Super Bowl XLIII, and an anticipated appearance at the 81st Academy Awards. The last of these went awry when, in what Rolling Stone termed “shocking news”, “The Wrestler” was snubbed by the Academy and failed to gain a nomination. Nevertheless, all the activity led Springsteen to say, “This has probably been the busiest month of my life.”

“Working on a Dream” was included in Springsteen’s February 1 performance during the Super Bowl. VH1 Classic aired the documentary Bruce Springsteen: The Making Of ‘Working On A Dream’ in early February 2009. The Working on a Dream Tour began on April 1, 2009, in the wake of the album’s release.

                                                                 53:22

          Release Notes:

Vegard Sverre Tveitan has been a mainstay of the
vast metal underground for over 15 years. At the
ripe age of 17, he helped to write and record the
groundbreaking self-titled EP with Emperor, a band
in which he was the undisputed leader of
composition and direction. He later added to the
avant-garde style with the family act Peccatum,
featuring the nightingale vocals of his wife.
However, after years of genre-defining and
expanding, the man known as Ihsahn surprisingly
reined it in for his solo career. The Adversary
was basically a toned-down version of later
Emperor mixed with the classic metal sounds of
bands like Mercyful Fate. A quality album, but
eclipsed by 2008′s AngL, which found the man very
comfortable in his new shoes leading a solo act.
But even that album’s display of blackened prog
virtuosity felt rather comfortable, as if Ihsahn’s
days of widening extreme metal’s horizons were
          behind him.

This is why After is such a shocking (and welcome)
surprise. Not only does it repeat the jump in
quality that AngL made, but it is Ihsahn’s most
experimental and forward-thinking work since the
demise of Peccatum, and easily the most
individualistic work of his entire career. From
the shifting dynamics and unorthodox song
structures to the holistic vision and prominent
use of saxophone (that’s right, saxophone), After
unveils a brave new Mr. Tveitan, one who has
rediscovered his genius and reignited the creative
          flame under his arse.

Despite the publicized switch to 8-string guitars,
many of the musical elements will be familiar to
fans. There are plenty of half black/half prog
riffs, harsh and clean vocals, and splashes of
neo-classicism. However, Ihsahn has added to and
advanced this musical palette with a superior
sense of album flow and variety. The difference is
instantly apparent as opener “The Barren Lands” is
notably less aggressive and more atmospheric than
overtures of past albums. Then he gives the
listener a meat hook whiplash with the downright
twisted “A Grave Inversed,” a layered stew of
black metal riffs, off-kilter blast beats, and an
utterly insane use of saxophone. Think La
Masquerade Infernale written by a technical black
metal version of Arcturus. The shifts continue
through the moody title track (the one song that
would have felt at home on The Adversary), and
into the thrash-tinged “Frozen Lakes on Mars,” a
delightfully catchy end to the album’s first act.

If Act I of After shows off Ihsahn’s heightened
sense of songwriting approach and variety, the
second act is where he adamantly and finally
states to all of metaldom that his solo career is
no mere Emperor afterthought. The largest
statement comes in the form of the ten minute
“Undercurrent,” which builds slowly over it’s
first third until a heart-wrenching saxophone
melody brings the album to a soaring emotional
peak. The song soon shifts into full prog, making
the most out of repetitive guitar patterns through
shifts in vocals, rhythm, and the drumming
subtlety of Asgeir Mickelson (who is absolutely on
fire here). A return to the sax melody reveals
just how essential the instrument is to the
emotional heft of After. It sometimes emulates the
traits of tremolo-picked guitar and is elsewhere
used as a substitute for keyboards, but it is when
the sax is employed as an additional, wordless
vocalist that it is most effective. Jorgen Munkeby
puts on an utterly tortured performance, miles
away from the pretentious use of the instrument
          elsewhere in metal.

Most albums would lie down and rest after such a
song. After does not. Following are the beautiful,
understated “Austere” and the imposing, minor key
“Heavens Black Sea,” the latter of which throws
down the gauntlet of heaviness, intimidation, and
majesty. Album finale “On the Shores” bookends a
few more minutes of progressive insanity with a
reprise of the saxophone wail from “Undercurrent,”
a small yet expert move which glues the entire
album together into much more than the sum of its
          parts.

Some will choose to place the same criticisms here
that have been given to Ihsahn’s past solo work.
Those who have had issues with his harsh vocal
style will likely still have them. The bass, while
higher in the mix than in the past, is still less
than prominent (and the only complaint about a
very stellar mixing job). But these issues are
inconsequential to Ihsahn’s resounding success in
achieving his vision, while simultaneously taking
his solo career to brilliant new levels. Even the
most jaded listener is strongly urged to give
After its fair shake. It is yet another masterful
achievement from a man who has made a career out
of them. The ball is in your court, everyone else.

Review: Metalcrypt (5/5)

When I first listened to this album, the awesomeness blew me away. I literally fell off my chair and it took me several days to recover from that much epic greatness. Coming from Denmark, this is quite possibly the greatest Thrash Metal album ever conceived. Perhaps the fact that these guys aren’t from either of the four big (Bay Area, Brazil, Germany, East Coast) scenes explains their unique sound. Most Thrash bands can be classified under one of those four categories, but Artillery can’t. While the band had a specific feeling on previous albums, the immensely improved songwriting and broadened influences make this album truly one of a kind. It is a departure from both Fear of Tomorrow and Terror Squad, though only in the most positive of ways.

The album starts off with “7:00 From Tashkent”, an intro with audible Middle-Eastern influences. Cool intro track, which sets the tone for later oriental vibes. After a minute or so “Khomaniac” kicks in, perhaps the band’s most known song. With a perfect mix of technical greatness and catchy, incredible vocals, this song is nothing short of perfection. Without overlooking interesting drumming, lyrics (about Ayatollah Khomeini) and basslines, this is probably the best song on the album. The same sort of riffing can be found on most of the album: technical Thrash/Speed riffs, Middle-Eastern passages, slower catchy licks and incredible solos. I have yet to find any metal band that possesses the same sort of riffage, though some bands (like Heathen and Satan) remind me of it at times. The uniqueness of this group and album in particular is perfectly illustrated with the first two songs.

Starting off with a sweet drum intro, an insane riff and a sweet harmony, “Beneath the Clay” is yet another song that grabs you by the balls from the very first second. Have I mentioned yet that both the vocals and lyrics on this album are among the best Thrash Metal has ever seen? Well, they are. Flemming Rønsdorf’s aggressive high-pitched lines are unmatched, save by a dozen of other metal vocalists. Incredibly, the album does not get weaker after the first handful of tracks. The title song is once again an avalanche of brain-melting riffs and strong hooklines. Listening to these compositions, it’s hard for me to imagine how big Artillery would have been if their label had done the advertising they deserved. For instance, this CD is better than anything Metallica has ever done — the main difference being that the latter was in the right place at the right time. That has never stopped the band though, who are at the time of posting working on yet another masterpiece.

The next two songs are “Bombfood” and “Don’t Believe”. The first tells the story of a young man who decides to join the army. The chorus in “Bombfood” without a doubt deserves a place in my top ten favourite choruses EVER. “Soldier, you’re not worth a damn! Take orders is all that you can. Obey ‘em, they’ll teach you ever rule. “Bombfood”, you’re nothing but a tool!” Great; simply great. Hearing that part of the song, not standing up and yelling the whole neighborhood awake is simply impossible. The second part of the duo, “Don’t Believe” is perhaps not as great as the first, though still a good song. These two songs are perhaps the “odd ones out” on the album, which is a great thing because it provides even more variety. I’m not sure if the phrase Thrash-ballad exists, but if such thing would exist it would surely apply to these two songs. Since they are somewhat similar, putting them apart on the album would have been a idea, though obviously I’m not complaining.

Up next are two other great thrashers, “Life in Bondage” and “Equal at First”. The attack of out-of-this-world riffs simply does not stop, much to my disbelief. Though similar in style to the first couple of tracks, the word “repetitive” is not in Artillery’s dictionary. The latter song is my least favourite of the album, though that’s not saying a lot. The Nazareth cover, “Razamanaz”, feels somewhat out of its place, and perhaps would have been better suited as a bonus track. The vocals are the best feature, degrading the original ones to pure embarrassment. Flemming is simply perfect. Unless you are allergic to high-pitched singing you will love him. He has a large range, sounds aggressive and less screechy then Bobby Ellsworth. What more could you possible ask for? Throughout the album, his lines (often anti-war) prove that you don’t need to sing about being evil in order to be a good Thrash band.

Closing song is “Back in the Trash”, a sequel to the 1987 song “In the Trash” (off their previous album, Terror Squad) … a worthy closing track to this incredible album. Flemming Rasmussen did a great job on producing the album, but then again what would you expect from him? For those of you who have been living in a cave for the last 25 years, he’s the guy who produced such albums as Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Covenant, etc. The clean, ball-grabbing mix is, simply put, perfect for these songs. He is probably among the best metal producers ever, and it’s no coincidence Metallica’s decline started at the very moment they changed him for Bob Rock.

Now, this album is an essential metal album. It’s a must have album, a classic album, a great album … perhaps even the best Thrash Metal album ever. You sort of get the point, but if you haven’t, I’m trying to say I highly recommend this. You should listen to it if you fit in one of the following categories:
* You don’t die upon hearing technical, awesome, fast riffs.
* You like Thrash.
* You like metal.
* You like music.
* You don’t mind high pitched vocals.
* You have ears.

The Arsis’s demos finally available on a proper format. This album is entitled
“As Guilt Becomes Regret”. The disc contains two demos from 2001 & 2002 plus
rare bonus tracks and a live video CD-Rom segment.

The music on the disc was recorded between 2001 and 2002 by guitarist/songwriter
James Malone and drummer Michael Van Dyne. These demos gained them considerable
attention in the underground music scene leading to several tours and landing
them with recording contracts from two notable record labels.

The two additional tracks found on this release are alternative studio takes
never before released. The CDrom video segment recorded April 12, 2003 at
PalletteÆs Outer Banks (Norfolk, VA) includes 3 classic Arsis songs and a
Mercyful Fate cover.

“As Regret Becomes Guilt” features impressive packaging with a 12 page booklet
that was designed by Mark Riddick. The ghastly illustrations and lyrics
contained within this unique packaging are printed in black and metallic gold.

Arsis is known for their unique blend of old school shredding heavy metal and
modern gut wrenching death metal.

Dr.dre – The Chronic 2001

Dr.dre - The Chronic 2001

2001, sometimes referred to by fans as Chronic 2001 or Dr. Dre 2001, is a 1999 hip hop album by famed rapper and producer Dr. Dre, featuring guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Hittman, Eminem, Xzibit, and others. Originally intended to be called The Chronic 2000 (the name was changed because of litigation with Dr. Dre’s former label Death Row Records), the album is the long-awaited follow-up to Dr. Dre’s classic 1992 album The Chronic. It brought the West Coast hip hop scene back to the spotlight after years of obscurity, showed that Dr. Dre could still make hits, and further established the career of Eminem, who went on to eventually become one of the best-selling rappers of all time. 2001 debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts and was eventually certified 6x platinum by the RIAA, with total worldwide sales of 10 million.
